Advancing Computing
as a Science & Profession.

A student-led community for people who want to learn, make and move technology forward.

What is ACM?

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is an international organisation dedicated to advancing computing as a science and profession. Founded in 1947, ACM has grown into one of the world's largest and most respected communities for computer science students, educators, researchers and industry professionals.

ACM supports the development of computing through research publications, international conferences, professional standards, competitions and educational resources. Its areas of interest cover a wide range of fields, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, data science, robotics, human-computer interaction and computer systems.

Through the ACM Digital Library, members can access an extensive collection of research papers, journals and conference proceedings. ACM also operates specialised communities known as Special Interest Groups, which bring together people working in specific areas of computing.

ACM Student Chapters

ACM Student Chapters bring the international ACM community to universities around the world. These chapters are led by students and create opportunities for members to develop their technical knowledge, professional skills and industry connections.

Student chapters commonly organise:

  • Technical workshops and training sessions
  • Guest lectures from academics and industry professionals
  • Hackathons, coding competitions and project showcases
  • Career development and networking opportunities
  • Research discussions and collaborative projects
  • Social events that connect students interested in technology

By joining an ACM Student Chapter, students become part of a wider global computing community while gaining practical experience beyond the classroom.

ACM at UoBD

At ACM UoBD, our goal is to help students recognise the true breadth of computer science and how it connects with fields far beyond traditional software development. From artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and cloud computing to biotechnology, healthcare, finance, robotics, space technology and other emerging industries, we want students to understand the wide range of opportunities available to them.

We aim to make computing more accessible and useful to students of all backgrounds and experience levels through practical projects, beginner-friendly workshops, industry-led events and collaborative learning. By providing relevant knowledge, hands-on experience and opportunities to explore different career paths, we hope to equip every student with the skills, confidence and experience needed to become industry-ready.
